Michael Carrick captains strong Man United team against Man City

Michael Carrick will captain Manchester United in
their EFL Cup meeting with Manchester City on
Wednesday, but there is still no place for Henrikh
Mkhitaryan in the squad.
Mkhitaryan has not pulled on a United shirt since
being subbed in the 2-1 derby defeat at Old
Trafford on Sept. 10 but was in contention to
return.
Wayne Rooney remains on the sidelines with a
thigh injury, while Eric Bailly and Phil Jones are
both out long term and Anthony Martial does not
appear in the 18.
Chris Smalling is left out after his disappointing
performance in the 4-0 drubbing at Chelsea on
Sunday, with Marcos Rojo coming in to partner
Daley Blind in the centre of defence and Luke
Shaw at left-back.

Juan Mata returns in place of Marouane Fellaini,
who is on the bench, with Carrick in for Jesse
Lingard who also is among the subs.
David De Gea, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and
Marcus Rashford all start.
City ring the changes from Saturday's draw at
home to Southampton, with Willy Caballero
replacing Claudio Bravo between the sticks.
Only Vincent Kompany and Leroy Sane keep their
places, with Nicolas Otamendi, Gael Clichy,
Fernando, Nolito, Jesus Navas and Kelechi
Iheanacho drafted in along with academy products
Pablo Maffeo, who makes his debut at right-back,
and Aleix Garcia, who scored the winner at
Swansea in the last round.
